Atratus was born from the belief that jewelry can hold more than beauty. It can hold memory, meaning, ritual, and fragments of our stories.
Atratus is a fine jewelry practice creating handcrafted, heirloom quality pieces rooted in symbolism, traditional craftsmanship, and storytelling.
The name comes from Cygnus atratus, the scientific name for the black swan, meaning “clothed in black.” The black swan carries associations of rarity, transformation, and the unknown. These ideas felt fitting for a jewelry practice centered around memory, ritual, and the stories we carry with us.
Atratus was born from an unexpected turning point in my own life which made me think differently about time, meaning, and the things we choose to carry forward. It became the catalyst for turning a longstanding love of jewelry and metalsmithing into something of my own.
THE METALSMITH & MAKER
I’m Jenna, the metalsmith and maker behind Atratus, a one-woman fine jewelry studio based in Charleston, South Carolina.
My journey with jewelry began in 2014 with metalsmithing classes at community college, eventually leading me to earn my BFA in Metalsmithing. After graduating, I spent five years working as a bench jeweler, where I continued to refine my skills and deepen my appreciation for traditional craftsmanship. Along the way, I received the SNAG Education Endowment Award, which allowed me to study the art of hand engraving.
Most of my designs begin with wax, which I carve by hand before casting, stone setting, engraving, and finishing each piece myself. I’m drawn to the slower, more tactile process of making jewelry and the freedom it gives me to create pieces that feel personal rather than mass produced.
Today, I’m grateful to spend my days making jewelry by hand, and to share that work with the people who find something of their own stories in it.
